등산이 필요한 주말 콘서트

 

하루 종일 한국 친구들과 제주도 여행을 했다. 이제 우리의 마지막 여행 장소에 도착했다.

 

그렇지만 그곳에 갈려면 정상까지 등산을 해야 한다. 왜냐하면 오늘밤 고근산에서 특별한 콘서트가 열리기 때문이다.

 

가기 전에 친구들에게 이 콘서트에 대해 물어봤다. 클래식음악 콘서트인지 궁금했기 때문이다. 내 친구들은 아마도 클래식 콘서트일거라고 했다. 솔직히 클래식은 내 스타일이 아니다.

 

 

그래도 15분 동안 땀 흘리며 어두운 오름을 등산했다. 정상에 도착하니 콘서트가 시작됐다. 그런데 내가 생각했던 것과는 달랐다. 너무 달랐다.

 

한라산생태문화연구소에서 주최하는 ‘별빛 오름콘서트’였다. 밤에 제주도민과 여행객들에게 야간에 즐길거리를 주기 위해 하는 행사였다.

 

지난달 3일부터 시작했고 매주 토요일 저녁 7시30반쯤부터 시작해 약 2시간정도 진행된다. 15회 콘서트를 할 예정이다.

 

고근산 정상에 전망대가 무대로 변했다. 배경에 서귀포 도시 야경이 보이고 바다에는 낚시 배 불빛도 보였다.

 

친구들과 같이 풀 위에 앉아서 기다렸다. 사회자가 나왔다. 그 사회자의 목소리는 행사 분위기와 함께 잘 어울렸다.

 

 

언제 클래식 음악이 시작될까 궁금했다. 하지만 없었다. 먼저 전통 한국 드럼 음악이 공연이 진행됐다. 다음에는 트럼펫 연주와 오페라 가수 노래가 이어졌다. 오름 정상에서 이런 음악을 들어서 진짜 기분이 좋았다.

 

오름 밑 동내에 사는 사람들은 갑작스런 음악소리를 듣고 무슨 생각을 했을까 궁금했다.

 

그렇지만 계속 음악만 연주되는 건 아니었다. 제주의 역사와 별 이야기도 있었다. 사람들이 소원지를 태우는 동안 시낭송도 있었다.

 

나는 마지막 공연에 너무 놀랐다. 갑자기 머리가 긴 한국 남자가 나타났다. 카우보이모자, 청바지, 플란넬 셔츠를 입고 있었다. 손에서는 바이올린이 피들이 있었다. 미국의 컨트리웨스턴 음악을 청중에게 소개했다.

 

그의 공연은 청중들을 사로잡았다. 참 흥미로운 조화였다. 존 덴버의 “Take Me Home, Country Roads”는 하이라이트였다. 모두들 같이 따라 불렀다.

 

앞으로 참석하실 분들은 모기약을 준비하라고 말하고 싶다. 또 물병도 준비하면 좋을 것 같다. 오름 입구에서 무료로 물을 나눠주지만 다 떨어지면 못 받는다.

 

마지막으로 좋은 것은 이 글을 쓸 때에도 여전히 콘서트가 있다는 것이다. 일정 확인 하고 참석해 좋은 시간을 보내길 바란다.

 

Starlight Oreum Concert

 

Weekly concert series requires a hike

 

I had been out all day with a group of Korean friends and this would be our final stop.

 

It would also be a final stop which required a climb up to the summit of one of Jeju Island's 368 oreums. A special musical concert was about to happen on Gogeunsan in Seogwipo.

 

Earlier in the day I had questioned my friends about the nature of the concert. I asked if it would be classical and heard replies that might be the case. That's not exactly my cup of tea.

 

However, after spending 15 very sweaty minutes climbing the tree covered oreum with friends and other attendees as dusk settled around, the musical program actually turned out to be very different from expectations.Very different indeed.

 

The concerts are part of a series called Starlight Oreum Concert and are put on by the Institute of Ecology and Culture for Hallasan.

 

They are seen as a way to give residents and tourists more things to do at night. This is an area of development which seems to be lacking on the island.

 

Beginning on Aug. 3 there will be 15 concerts in total running every Saturday evening. The scheduled start time is 7:30 p.m. lasting for about two hours.

 

At the top of Gogeunsan a wooden viewing platform would double as a stage and in the background the lights of the city were clearly seen as were the fishing boats sitting out on the ocean.

 

I grabbed my own seat with friends on the grass near the front of the crowd to appreciatethe view as the announcer appeared. He began proceedings in a soft tone of voice which matched the atmosphere well.

 

I also wondered when the classical music would start, but it never did. Instead attendees were first treated to a traditional Korean drum performance followed by trumpet and opera talent. It was great to listen to this in the setting of an oreum summit.

 

I also wondered what local residents would think about the relaxing trumpet and opera sounds floating down to the neighbourhood below.

 

However, the program did not always include music. The story of the stars and Jeju's star culture was also explained. Attendees read poems while others had their paper wishes burned in a ceremonial style.

 

I have to say it was the final musical performance of theevening which really surprised me. Suddenly a Korean man emerged from the crowd with long hair, dressed in a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, blue jeans, flannel shirt and fiddle in his hands. He was going to play country and western music.

 

His impressive and showman-like performance really got the crowd going with skill and sound. It was such an interesting combination to have Jeju Island, oreum and country and western music come together. The familiar strains of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" was a highlight in which the crowd engaged in a sing-along.

 

If you are thinking about attending then if might be worth preparing bug repellent for mosquitoes. Water is also provided at the oreum entrance, but if you miss it then consider taking your own drinks too.

 

One final good thing to note is by the time you read this story there will still be concerts to attend so please check the schedule.
