발길이 많이 닿은 오름에서 볼 수 있는 많은 것 중에 하나
제주도민과 관광객들 모두 다 좋아한다. 내가 제주에 있는 동안 자주 가는 곳이기도 하다. 정상에도 올라가고 해안코스를 걸어서 인근 별도봉에도 간다.
지난달에는 사라봉을 탐사하고 싶었다. 그래서 배드민턴 코트 앞에 도착해 별도봉으로 방향이 아닌 운동기구 옆길 바다가 보이는 길로 갔다. 시가지 방향이다. 그 길을 걷다가 산지등대를 발견했다.
사실은 산지등대에 대해 이미 알고 있었다. 그러나 바로 가까이에서 보는 것은 처음이다. 매우 하얗고 깨끗하고 잘 보존돼 있었다. 제주항을 훤히 내려다 볼 수 있었다.
난 영국의 중앙부 지역에서 자랐다. 정리된 농장과 밭이 많다. 그래서 낮선 등대 방문은 특별했다.
등대 정원을 지나 본채로 갔다. 운 좋게 그날은 ‘바다의 날’ 주간이었다. 이 등대에서도 ‘바다의 날’ 기념행사를 하고 있었다.
한 등대직원이 우리를 안내했다. 등대는 밤에 배에게 빛을 보내 길을 안내한다는 고정관념만 알고 있었지만 다른 직무도 있다는 걸 나는 알게 됐다.
예를 들면 산지등대에서 제주 다른 모든 등대들에게 자료를 보낸다. 바다온도, 해류와 풍속 등 해상의 기상을 전해준다.
등대 불빛에 대해서도 자세히 알 수 있었다. 이 시스템은 도로 신호등 시스템과 비슷하다. 하지만 그 빛들은 아주 강하다.
1999년에 만들어진 이 현대적인 등대는 높이 18m이고 그 빛은 48km까지 도달할 수 있다. 이곳엔 1916년에 만들어진 예전 등대가 지금의 등대 옆에 아직도 있다. 역사적 값어치가 때문에 잘 보존되고 있다.
이날 이어도에 대한 공부도 할 수 있었다. 안내한 직원은 ‘이어도에 가봤다’고 했다. 새로운 사실도 알았다. 실제로 이어도 연구소는 제일 높은 돌 위가 아닌 그 옆에 만들어졌다는 것을 알게 됐다.
또 다른 유용한 정보도 알게 됐다. 산지 등대에서는 민박처럼 하룻밤을 머물 수 있다. 등대가 아닌 바로 옆 건물에서다. 그리고 무료다. 하지만 예약이 많아 미리 사전에 예약해야 한다. 이곳에 머물면 특별한 제주 경험을 할 수 있을 것이다.
‘바다의 날’이 아니어도 투어는 할 수 있다. 그러나 등대직원이 등대일과 안내원 일을 같이 하기 때문에 미리 전화로 예약해야 한다.
이곳에서는 등대가 어떻게 제주 해안을 안전하게 지키고 있는지를 알게 될 것이다. 또한 어린이들은 컴퓨터 스크린에 있는 지도와 큰 건물 구조를 좋아할 것 같다.
이날 전에 가보지 못한 길을 가게 돼서 ‘새 사라봉’을 발견했다. 새 정보, 새 경치와 새 역사를 알게 됐다.
하지만 아직도 쓰지 못한 장소들이 있다. 산지 등대 입구 앞에 사찰 사라사(寺), 김만덕 기념관, 3001년에 열게 될 제주시 타입캡슐 등이다. 또 비밀 양궁장도 있다.
그래서 사라봉에 가면 배회해도 좋을 것 같다. 여기저기 좋은 장소들이 있기 때문이다.

Sarabong is almost always in our view as we come and go from Jeju City.
Erupting alongside the ocean on the city's eastern-side, it is a popular spot for exercising or taking a stroll among locals and tourists alike.
Sarabong is also a place I've visited quite often during my time here on the island. Usually trekking up to the top and continuing on around the coastal path to neighbouring Byeoldobong.
However, last month, I decided to try something different. Instead to taking the route most-worn by my feet, I would deliberately take any other route. Wandering about just to find what else hides on Sarabong's slopes.
Upon arriving next to the badminton courts I chose to follow a route down to the coast, passing a long line of exercise equipment. It is a route back towards the city and a route that led me to discover Sanji Lighthouse.
Actually, I was already vaguely aware of the construction, but this was the first time I'd been up close. The brilliantly white, clean, and starkly maintained concrete structures making up the lighthouse complex, overlook Jeju's main harbor.
I grew up a mile or so from the geographic centre of England around farms and orderly fields. Visiting a lighthouse has always been a rare treat.
After taking in the complex's green, well-ordered garden, I ducked inside the main lighthouse building. By pure coincidence I'd also arrived on the closest weekend after ocean appreciation day. A day on which locations around Korea put on activities or throw open their doors to highlight the importance of the ocean.
Speaking to one of the keepers, I began to discover this lighthouse's duties go beyond the stereotypical view of shining lights into the night sky. The shining light is just one of the many duties performed. For example, computer systems relay data back from the other lighthouses dotted around Jeju's coast. This data is mapped and in turn provides vital information about water temperatures, current strength, and wind speeds.
I did get to take a closer look at the lights each type of lighthouse uses as well. This system, I was told, works like traffic lights on our roads.
The lights are also very powerful. The modern 18-meter-high lighthouse dating from 1999 is topped with a beam piercing the sky up to a distance of 48km.
The first lighthouse on the site, however, dates back to 1916. It is still there today and sits right next to its modern-day successor. It also has historical worth and will be preserved for the future.
Even if it's not an ocean appreciation day it is still possible to have a Korean-language tour of the lighthouse. As the tour guide is a lighthouse keeper it is best to call ahead of time to make arrangements. For adults, the lighthouse really offers an insight into how the ocean around Jeju is kept safe and patrolled. Children will be impressed by the computer screen data and structures.
Plus there's also an opportunity to learn about Iedo from a staff member who has actually visited the location. I found out the research platform isn't on the highest point.
One of the quirky things to note about Sanji Lighthouse is the possibility to stay in the complex for a night. Not in the lighthouse itself, but in an adjacent building, very much like a minbak. It is free as well. Make your reservation online in advance and join the long waiting list.
A route I'd never taken before led me to discover a whole new area of Sarabong. New information. New sweeping views of the city. I still didn't even get to write about the small temple, Sarasa, opposite the lighthouse entrance. Or the Kim Man-deok memorials. Or Jeju City's time capsule to be opened in 3001. Or even the hidden archery range.
So just go get lost on Sarabong. You'll be surprised by what kind of delightful places, like Sanji Lighthouse, you might stumble upon.
