여러분도 알다시피 난 제주올레 자원봉사자다. 그래서 이미 클린올레, 올레 아카데미, 함께 걷기를 소개했다.
이번 달에는 내가 최근에 가입했고, 사랑하게 된 그룹에 대해서 얘기하고 싶다. 제주올레 청년 서포터즈, 벨레기 간세.
이 그룹은 30여 명이 참석한다. 고등학생부터 30대까지 있다. 제주도에서 사는 사람도 있고 육지에서 사는 사람도 있다. 이 멤버들은 1년 동안 다양한 올레 자원봉사 일을 한다.
내가 벨레기 간세들과 처음으로 같이 한 일은 올레코스 시작, 중간, 종점 스탬프 박스를 페인트칠 하는 것이었다. 올레길에 있는 스탬프 박스들이 벨레기 간세 덕분에 더 잘 보이게 됐다. 페인트칠을 하다가 옷과 신발에도 페인트가 묻었지만 기분은 좋았다.
한 여성 벨레기 간세 멤버는 혼자서 추자도에 가서 가장 어려운 코스지만 페인트칠을 완수하고 돌아왔다. 아주 대단하다고 생각했다.
벨레기 간세는 또 제주도에 축제가 있으면 가서 제주 올레를 홍보한다. 최근에 탐라문화제에서 아침부터 밤까지 우리는 부스 앞에서 열심히 일했다. 지나가는 사람들에게 다가오는 올레 걷기축제에 대해 알렸다. 즐거웠다. 난 한국 사람들에게도 올레 소식을 설명했다. 외국인으로써 이런 정보를 한국 사람들에게 주니 기분이 조금 이상하기도 했다.
육지에 사는 벨레기 간세 멤버들은 제주도에 자주 못 온다. 그래서 인터넷에서 SNS로 홍보하거나 페이스북에 포스팅을 한다. 그리고 몇몇 육지 벨레기 간세들은 서울 홍대에서 올레 걷기 축제 홍보 행사를 하기도 했다.
무릉 생태학교에서 벨레기 간세들과 같이 한 밤은 가장 기억에 남는 활동 중에 하나다. 그 곳은 초등학교였는데 지금은 회의장 또는 숙박 시설로도 쓰이고 있다. 우리는 그 곳에서 바비큐를 해 먹었다. 제주 시골에서 재미있는 시간을 보낸 좋은 기회였다.
내 이야기를 통해 벨레기 간세들이 무슨 일을 하는지 조금이라도 설명이 됐으면 좋겠다.
때때로 힘이 들기도 한다. 비가 오면 비를 맞고 일하며 하루의 끝에는 지치기도 한다. 자원봉사자들이니 돈도 안 받는다. 그리고 갑작스런 행사가 생기면 참석해야 한다. 하지만 지금까지 정말 훌륭한 경험이었다.
내년 벨레기 간세 자원봉사자에 관심 있으면 생각해 보자. 내년 초에 새로운 벨레기 간세 멤버를 모집할 것이다. 학부모들도 자녀들에게 추천하면 좋을 것 같다. 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있고 학교 교과에서 배울 수 없는 것을 얻을 수 있을 것이다.
Jeju Olle’s Young Supporters
As you know I am quite involved with volunteering for Jeju Olle Trail these days. In previous stories I have explored Clean Olle, the Olle Academy, as well as Walk Together events.
This month I want to introduce another group I’ve recently come to know and love. They are the Jeju Olle Young Supporters, or the Belegi Ganse as they are more commonly known in Korean.
It is a group of 30 or so youngsters ranging from high school students through to those in their thirties spread out across the Korean peninsula charged with carrying out various Olle duties during a one year period of responsibility.
One such responsibility, and one which introduced me to their activities, required members of the group to spruce up the route stamp boxes with a lick of paint. You’ll notice all start, midway, and end stamp boxes now have a blue outline and are easier to spot during a walk. That’s thanks to the work of the Belegi Ganse who ended up getting the paint over their clothes and shoes.
One member even went to Chujado by herself. There she took a can of blue paint through the hardest Olle route to complete the task. Quite an adventure for a young supporter I think.
Other responsibilities include attending festivals to promote Jeju Olle Trail. For example I joined the group at the Tamna Culture Festival in Tapdong. I was able to help out alongside other volunteers for a morning and into the afternoon. It was simply wonderful to do this. We spoke to numerous passing people and handed out leaflets. I even had the opportunity to speak with Koreans about Jeju Olle Trail. It felt a bit strange to be conveying this information being a foreigner.
Also by the time this reaches press an event at Jeju National University will have happened as will one of our showcase events for the year, the walking festival. Expect the young supporters to be out there too in huge numbers working from morning until late into the night.
Of course these activities are all on Jeju Island. What about the members living on the mainland? Some of them help with social network services such as Facebook while others go into Hongdae with our Ganse mascot.
I have to say one of my most memorable evenings was getting to hang out with a group at the Murung-ri Ecology School. The building was an old elementary school now turned into a countryside retreat. You can have meetings, stay over, and cook, which is what the Belegi Ganse did. We had a great barbecue party in the school field. It was a real chance to unwind, have fun, all in the natural special countryside setting of Jeju Island.
Yes it is hard work at times too. You’ll be out walking in the rain, getting soaking wet, and be tired at the end of the day. You also don’t get money and will have sudden events pop up in your calendar. Yet I have to say the experience has been a great one for the year so far.
If you’re interested in being a part of this group and are aged from high school through to your mid-thirties then the 2014 intake of young supporters will begin early next year. I urge not just students and youth to consider this, but for parents reading this too. You can meet a wide range of people from all backgrounds as well as learn skills your children can’t find in a textbook.
