새 언어 배우기

 

오전 9시30분. 어느 일요일 아침 나의 첫 한국어 능력시험이 시작됐다. 고등학교 졸업 후부터 언어 시험을 봐 본적이 없었다. 이건 불어시험이 아니다. 이 언어는 고등학교때까지 전혀 몰랐던 언어이다.

 

시험 문제지를 펼치고 답에 동그라미를 그렸다. 그 다음에는 특별한 컴퓨터종이에 내가 체크한 답을 조심스럽게 옮겼다.

 

90분 동안 단순한 문법과 어휘 문제가 있었다. 그 다음에 300자로 '주말 취미생활'에 대한 에세이 문제였다. 30분 동안 쉬는 시간이 있었고 듣기와 읽기시험이 다시 시작됐다.

 

1월20일 제주도 한라대학에서 제 29회 한국어 능력 시험이 있었다. 한국어 능력시험은 1997년에 처음으로 시작됐다. 1-2급까지 초급단계이고 3-4급까지 중급단계이다. 한국 대학교에 입학하고 싶다면 3급 이상이 필요하다. 5-6급은 고급단계이다.

 

처음 보는 시험이어서 가장 쉬운 초급을 보기로 했다. 교실에는 나와 비슷한 처지의 사람들이 여러 명 있었다.

 

이 시험은 한국에서는 일년에 4번 있고 투르크메니스탄, 베네수엘라, 카메룬 등 53개의 나라와 165곳(밀라노, 테헤란등)에서는 일년에 2번 있다.

제주도에서는 중국사람이 제일 많았다. 내 시험장에서 한 네덜란드인을 만났다. 두 명의 영국인들, 한 북 아메리카 남자들의 목소리도 들렸다.

조금 이상한 느낌과 생각이 들었다. 상황은 바뀐 듯 했다. 제주에서 거의 모든 외국인들은 한국인들에게 영어를 가르친다. 한국사람들은 영어 시험 중요하기 때문에 열심히 공부하고 긴장한다.

내 한국인 친구들에게 한국어 능력 시험 얘기했다. '한국어 능력 시험이 있냐'며 많은 친구들 놀랐다. “제임스, 긴장 안돼? 어떻게 준비 하고 있어?” 친구들니 내게 물어봤다.

스트레스는 많이 받지 않았다. 왜냐하면 나는 한국 대학교에 가거나 한국 사무실에서 일 할 것이 아니기 때문이다. 그래도 잘 하고 싶었다.

그래서 한국어 문법 교과서 자주 공부하고 있다. 어휘를 많이 공부하고 한국어 선생님과 함께 같이 연습 하고 있다.

생각해 보면 쓰기시험이 제일 쉬웠다. 300자로 오름 등산과 내 축구 팀에 대해서 썼다. 시간이 부족했다. 그러나 말하기 시험이 없어서 조금 실망 했다. 왜냐하면 일상생활 대화는 조금 자신이 있었기 때문이다.

그리고 나는 조사를 얼마나 어려워하는지 다시 한번 깨닫게 됐다.

한국어 능력 시험지에는 한국어만 있다. 시험 감독자는 한국어만 말하고 한국어 사전도 사용 할 수 없다. 그래서 이해할 수 없는 말이 나와도 어쩔 수 없다.

29th Test of Proficiency in Korean
A new language learning experience

 

It was 9:30am on a Sunday morning and it was time to start my first foreign language proficiency test since graduating high school many years ago.

 

This time it wasn't French. This time it was Korean, a language I had no idea about during high school.

So I opened my test paper and began circling my answers. The next step was to check and carefully move these answers to a special computer-readable paper. Over the course of 90 minutes I answered basic vocabulary and grammar questions, followed by an essay about what I do on the weekend.

After a short break of 30 minutes a listening and reading assessment began.

For those on Jeju, the 29th Test of Proficiency in Korean took place on Jan. 20 at Halla University. The first TOPIC was conducted in 1997.

Grade boundaries range from one to two for beginners, three to four for intermediate, and five to six for advanced. As it was my first time taking the test, I decided to go for the lowest level. The test takes place 4 times a year at 16 sites across Korea and twice internationally at 165 locations in 53 countries. Countries include Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Cameroon. Cities include Milan and Tehran.

The overwhelming nationality going for it in Jeju City were Chinese students. I did speak to one male student from the Netherlands. I also heard two other young males speaking with British accents and another male from North America.

Here we all were taking a language proficiency test in Korea. The tables had turned. Usually it is the other way around isn't it? Foreigners on Jeju teach English to Koreans. It is the Koreans busy studying and getting nervous about the tests.

When I told my Korean friends that I would be taking a Korean language proficiency test most were surprised.

Something like this exists? “So James, aren't you nervous? How do you prepare?” some of them asked.

Everyone taking the test has different reasons for doing so. This time I didn't feel too much pressure because I didn't need the result to go to a Korean university. Also, I'm not applying for a job at a Korean company. The Chinese students are seeking a grade to go to a Korean university. However, I still wanted to do well.

Therefore I prepared with my textbooks and with my Korean teacher. I study a lot of vocabulary and grammar.

Looking back, writing turned out to be easiest section of the test for me. 300 words wasn't enough to explain my love of hiking oreums on Saturday and playing soccer on Sunday mornings.

I wish there had been a speaking section on the test, because I'm not too bad at everyday conversation.
I also realized how much I hate particles.

By the way everything for the test is done in Korean. The invigilator only speaks Korean and all of the questions are in Korean too. You cannot use a dictionary either, so if you don't know a word there's not much help for you.
