29회 제주포럼C 제주탐방
내 이야기와 블로그 읽은 이면, 내가 그냥 일상생활 이야기에 관심 많이 있음을 알 것이다. 그래서 풍수지리는 나에게 새로운 영역이었다.
먼저 체오름에 갔다. 오름 주변에 어떤 에너지 있는지 알아내기 위해 올랐다.
제주관광대학 인테리어 건축과 안선진 교수님이 이날 우리의 전문가 안내원이 돼 설명해줬다. “산의 생기가 모여 있는 곳을 혈(穴)이라고 하는데 체오름은 그 혈을 가지고 있습니다. 산의 생기가 빠져나가지 못하도록 물(水)이 보호해야하는데 물이 밖에서 안으로 들어오는 형상을 하지요.” 제주에서 오름 등산을 많이 했지만 체오름은 처음이다. ‘왜 못 와봤지?’ 하는 생각도 들었지만 어쨌든 행복했다.
체오름을 오른 뒤에 97번 도로에 있는 한 비빔밥 식당에서 점심을 먹었다. 이곳은 성산에 갈 때 마다 지나가는 곳이다. 내가 좋아하고 같이 제주도 여행을 자주 하는 친구와 제주대에서 나무를 연구하는 교수님 앞에 앉아 같이 음식을 먹으면서 서로에 대해 알기 위해 대화를 했다.
점심식사를 마치고 버스로 신흥리에 갔다. 성산 근처의 신흥리가 아니다. 이곳 신흥리는 조천 근처에 있다. 여기서 5개의 방사탑을 봤다. 예전에 사람들이 이곳에 나쁜 에너지 있다고 믿어서 마을을 보호하는 방사탑을 만들었다. 더구나 이 방사탑 중 2개는 문화재로 등록돼 있다.
마지막 일정으로 아라동에 있는 죽성마을을 방문했다. 안 교수님에 따르면 “한라산은 동서로 개장해 얼굴이 서북사면에서 북쪽이고 등이 남사면이라고 했다. 한라산의 생기가 북쪽 얼굴 앞으로 흘러내린 땅이 옛 마을 ‘죽성마을’이라고 설명했다.”
산책을 마치고 제주종합경기장으로 돌아왔다.
이날은 아주 흥미로웠지만 점심식사 후에 조금 우울했다. 한국어로 평범한 대화는 괜찮다. 하지만 풍수지리 내용이 너무 복잡하고 어려워서 잘 이해하지 못했다. 그래서 한국어를 잘 모르는 외국인들은 제주문화 지나칠 수밖에 없다.
지금까지 제주포럼C의 제주탐방에 두 번 참석했다. 두 번 다 언어에 문제가 있었지만 다 좋았다. 앞으로도 계속 참석할 생각이다. 제주도민과 특히 제주 이민자들에게 추천할 것이다. 매달 한 번의 토요일이 필요하다. 그러나 우리 고장에 대해서 더 많이 알 수 있다.
“산에서 잠시 명상하거나 산과 물과 대화하는 것은 참 좋은 기운을 만듭니다. 사람도 이와 같습니다. 좋은 사람을 만나면 기분이 좋고 즐거워지지요.” 안 교수님이 설명했다. “좋은 분들을 만나서 저 역시 좋은 생기를 많이 받고 돌아왔습니다.”
나도 동의한다. 나도 좋은 에너지 받았다.
Jeju and divination based on topography
Jeju Forum C 29th Jeju Travel Day
On Dec. 8 alongside a group of Jeju residents and mainland immigrants, I visited Chae Oreum, the Shinhung-ri Bang-sa Tops, and Juk-seong Village, as Jeju Forum C brought together all kinds of people to learn and talk about the island.
If you read my published stories and blog you might realize my interests are more about practical everyday-life issues on Jeju. So this topic of divination based on topography is a new area for me.
The first stop was Chaeoreum and a hike to find out more about what kind of energy surrounds it.
Our expert guide for the day, An Seon-jin, of Jeju Tourism College, would later explain to me: “There is a place called 'hyeol' where the mountain's energy gathers. Chaeoreum has this 'hyeol'. Water protects this energy so it doesn't disappear. The water comes into Chaeoreum.”
I have hiked many oreums on Jeju, but never this one. I wondered why I missed it, but was happy to finally go there.
After our adventure there we stopped for lunch at a bibimbap restaurant on the 97. It is a location I always pass on the interior road to Seongsan. I sat across from my good Jeju travel friend and a professor from Jeju National University who studies trees on the island. While enjoying the food we tried to find out more about each other.
With lunch done we took our bus to Sihung-ri and, no, not the one near Seongsan. This is the Shinhung-ri near Jocheon. Here we looked out into the ocean at the five bangsa top. People believed that this area had bad energy so these tops were built for protection, two of which have special cultural registration.
Our final stop of the day was Juk-seong Village in Aradong. According to An, “Halla Mountain's face is north and the back is south. So the live energy from Halla Mountain's face flows to Juk-seong Village.”
We took a brisk walk we were back on the bus and back to the stadium complex in Jeju City.
There was so much interesting information throughout the day, but I got a little depressed after lunch. Every day conversation is okay for me with the Korean language. Yet the language of divination based ontopography remains very difficult. As a foreigner I realize that for as much as you think you know about Jeju, to be honest you still really don't know anything unless you can speak the language.
I have participated with Jeju Forum C's Jeju Travel Day in November and now in December. Despite the language barrier both times have been wonderful days and I have learned new things about Jeju. I will be participating in more Jeju Forum C Travel Days in the future and I recommend it to Jeju residents or mainland immigrants as well. It is one Saturday morning a month when you can really learn more about the place we all call home.
“Meditating in the mountain and having a conversation with the mountain and water makes really good energy. It is the same for humans. If you meet nice people you feel happy and pleasant… I met many nice people and I received nice energy from them as well,” An explained. I agree. Nice energy indeed.
